If you’re planning to sell or trade in your car, it’s important to address the personal information stored in your current vehicle’s electronic system before turning in the keys. Just like smartphones and computers, cars are essentially computers themselves and can contain sensitive data. Even after performing a factory reset, additional steps like these may be required:

• Canceling or transferring satellite radio or mobile Wi-Fi hotspot subscriptions
• Removing contacts / address book
• Log out of, and remove pre-filled login information for, mobile apps
• Deleting or ejecting media containing digital content like music, e-books, or podcasts
• Clearing location and navigation history
• Clearing garage and gate door codes

You’ll also want to disassociate your old car from any smartphone apps provided by the manufacturer, such as those used for keyless start, tracking, security, etc.

Be sure to notify your auto insurance company once the sale is complete.
